My Approach to Creativity

I employ creativity in many dimensions:
Interactive.
Multimedia.
Digital Design.
Flash Coding.
Animation.
Still Art.
Photography.
Sculpture.
Arcade Cabinets.
You name it.

My artistic goals revolve around a continuing series of attempts to unify opposing forces in life: the rational & the abstract; the rigid and the organic; the simple and the complex; the designer and the client; and even the human and the computer.

My interactive inventions involve fascinating function with detailed design to elicit enjoyable educational experiences (rarely with so much alliteration). I like to create immersive experiences for people which are intuitive and memorable for both the information delivered and the emotional impact that the delivery itself can evoke. Whenever possible I love to unite the beauty of the pixels with the beauty of clean, efficient Flash Actionscript as a means of giving responsive life and intelligence to the interface. Very often this requires a thorough understanding of the underlying goals and opportunities present in the media at hand. An understanding of the audience. An understanding of context.

In my photography and digital photo manipulations, I prefer to work in a style of abstract realism. Making the tangible seem elusive or abstract. Rotating things into new levels of perspective. Using architectural forms to further goals in design rather than structural integrity. Capturing nuances that are left ignored on a daily basis. Exploiting that which is mundane to make it something other than mundane.

My 2D still art typically involves an electronic stylus and Macintosh computer in order to more tangibly interact with pixel-based artwork. My digital paintings tend towards a painterly expressionist, often using symbolic or dynamic color to achieve a dramatic effect. At the same time, I make use of my grounding in traditional photography and drawing to refine the mixture with any digital darkroom work that may be required to retouch or adjust my assets to meet my needs. When animating, I am fascinated by 3 dimensionality, but more often end up relying on my wealth of 2D Flash vector animation experience to attain a lightweight web delivery.

I really enjoy taking breaks from the 2D world occasionally to create something 3 dimensional, be it in a model in the computer or, more often, something in real life. In the past year I've made my own Tiki Bar (complete with giant tiki head) out of a discarded bed frame & futon. I'm nearing completion of my first of two upright arcade cabinets (complete with fully functional user controls, display, etc). And yet I still find time to make towers with my son out of blocks.
